In this paper, I will present Heilbroner s arguments for posterity, in relation to how we treat our environment. In addition, I will compare two ethical theories, Kant s Categorical Imperative to Mill s theory of Utilitarianism. The categorical Imperative can be defined as a universal law without contradiction. Kant s Categorical Imperative states that rationality and reasoning are the source of universal moral obligations, and rational beings are the embodiment of the moral law itself. The only way that moral goodness ca n exist at all in the world is for rational creatures to understand and adopt the rules of moral law and do it as a sense of duty. Therefore, if there were no rational beings, the moral dimension of the world would not exist. This deontological perspective focuses primarily on the intention of our actions, rather than the consequence. Under the categorical imperative, one must follow formulations in order to make rational ethical decisions. The first formulation states that any act that you commit must become universal. If that act cannot become universal, then we must refrain from it. For example, in making a decision on whether or not to steal, one must ask if it would be acceptable to them if someone were to steal from them. In making an act universal, we must imagine a world in which the act is always permissible. The second formulation proclaims that you may not use any human being, including oneself, as a mere means. This explains that you cannot use any form of humanity as merely an object or tool, regardless of independent desires or passions. The sociological imagination is the â€Å"quality of mind† (Mills, 1959: 4) that enables individuals to look outside their private sphere of consciousness and identify the structures and institutions in society that influence or cause their personal experiences. In this way, by looking at the bigger picture, they can understand their place in society and explain their circumstance in terms of societal influence. It was developed by Mills in a time of great social upheaval – industrialisation, globalisation and capitalism meant that the social phenomena were different to those previously experienced. Firstly, what is the structure of the society being studied? Secondly, what relevance does its context in history have? And thirdly, how does it influence and shape those within it? He was man enough to feel compassion for the sick and God enough to heal the infirmity. Over and over again in scriptures we see that Jesus was moved was compassion for the people in which he encountered. An example would be the feeding of the five-thousand in Matthew 9:36. He was moved with compassion on them; this shows Jesus and his humanity which if Jesus operated this way then we as Pastors have the same responsibility. Through miracles and interventions that take place even today show us that God is very much active in the lives of his people most recently with the release of women who had been kidnapped and held in captivity for over ten years and now they are free! This is God at work. This should be the passionate work of every Pastor to make it know that Jesus is not only real but he acts of behalf of His people. This does not mean that people will not go through issues in life, but it does mean that because God is active in the lives of His people we can make it through every situation. This type of discipline is accomplished through continual and pervasive surveillance, not necessarily via cameras or videotape but through an organized social and professional hierarchy. For instance, at the factory, the supervisors keep close eyes on the workers. At school, the administration and teachers keep their eyes on the students. This sign should read â€Å"Low-Emitting, Fuel-Efficient Vehicle Parking Only.† Sign makers in the United Kingdom are so polite! They ever so regretful that they must inconvenience you by informing you that this parking area is unsuitable for HGV’s. (In other words – to translate for Americans don’t park your semi here, bub.) That’s a charming sign, but an apostrophe and an s signals possession; an s alone indicates a plural, and that’s what â€Å"HGVs† is. Therefore, the message invites the question, â€Å"Unsuitable for HGV’s what? And who is HGV?† That’s comforting to know that none customers I guess that means â€Å"no customers† will be towed away. (Sometimes, after I dine at a Mexican restaurant, I feel like I need to be towed away or, better yet, hoisted onto a flatbed truck.) Oh, I get it now: noncustomers. What really clinches this failure of a sign is the gratuitous period after away, and the resulting fragment that follows. What’s a privae, and how does one park it (or them, as the Latin plural appendage -ae seems to indicate)? How kind of the sign maker, by the way, to refrain from taking up all that space on the weekends with a fleet of privas. Another factor is health. On average someone eat fast food a least 2 times a week so compare to someone who doesn’t eat that much can gain up to 10 more pound. If you don’t exercise daily you can become out of shape fast. People who have family members with some diseases like Diabetes and high blood pressure should not eat as much fast food as they do because just eating it 2 times a week can double the incidence of insulin resistance, a risk factor for Diabetes. There is also lots of sodium in fast food and that alone can give you high blood pressure. People who eat fast-food 4 or more times a week, up their risk of dying from heart disease by 80%. Fast foods create a much higher risk of heart disease because of the high level of saturated or transfats found in much of the food. Those fats can clog the arteries and cause high cholesterol levels. A well-balanced food contains all essential elements which are necessary for human development. The processional â€Å"Here Comes the Bride† and the recessional â€Å"The Wedding March.† I am writing why the processional â€Å"Here Comes the Bride† and the recessional â€Å"The Wedding March† are being prohibited in the Catholic Church. As a catholic girl, I have always dreamed of walking down the aisle to â€Å"Here Comes the Bride,† and leaving the wedding to â€Å"The Wedding March.† This was to be the moment that I could cherish , the moment that would be unforgettable. Now that I am ready to be married, is when I am upset that these two songs are no longer allowed in the Catholic Church. The catholic church’s approach on the music of a wedding, is that the function of music is to be minsterial, and the music must serve and never dominate. The catholic church states that what is true for Sunday liturgy is true for the wedding liturgy, and Sunday Mass sets the standard for all other liturgies. These two pieces of music are considered Secular music, which is defined in the Webster’s Dictinary as â€Å"of† or relating to worldly things as distinguished from things relating to church or religion; not sacred or religious. There are many religions that have restrictions on the type of music that is allowed at a wedding or ceremony. The Protestant religion will most generally allow secular music during the ceremony, however you will still need to consult your officiant regarding guidelines. For a Jewish ceremony, secular music is usually allowed in Reform and Conservative Jewish weddings, however in an Orthodox ceremony, the music is traditionally performed with only one instrument, the violin or the flute. For an Eastern Orthordox ceremony, traditionally the only music allowed is sung by an unaccompanied choir, but organs and instruments are becoming more acceptable. For a Muslim ceremony, there is usually no music performed during the ceremony. For a Hindu ceremony, music is an intergral part of the ceremony that most often includes vocals, drums, string and wind instruments. The Hindu ceremony is dictated by the type of ceremony, so personalization of a selection may be restricted. For a Roman Cathol ic ceremony only nonsecular music is allowed. The processional â€Å"Here Comes the Bride† is a song by Richard Wagner’s â€Å"Bridal Chorus.† Some people refer to this song as â€Å"corny† and recollecting it as songs played in a Las Vegas Wedding Chapel. However, supposedly there are religious reasons as to why this song should not be played in a church let alone a catholic church.

Pericles and Martin Luther were both very influential people of their time. Even today their legacy’s live on and many times are still referred to. Without their effort in perusing with what they believed was right and keeping the motivation to change it, the world wouldn’t be where we are today. Pericles brought idea of democracy to Athens. He believed that the true value of Athens was found in the common good of the people. He worked to ensure that every Athenian had land and some link to their government. People should represent equality and it was at the will of the people that Athens existed and flourished or failed. He came to this idea of establishing a democracy because of the past the not only Athens had, but Greece had also. In the beginning of the 5th century B.C, the Persian Wars had started (499-480 B.C.). Athens had agreed to aid cities that bordered the Persian Empire. Darius the Great, the ruler or Persia, turned his attention to the Greek cities. Athens then defeated the Persian Army. Xerxes took control of Persia and burned Athens to the ground. Greece then rebelled and took another victory against Persia. At this time, Greece had an opportunity to blossom but it was not one unified country. Pericles rose to power to strengthen Greece. In 461 marked the start of The Age of Pericles. This continued until 429 B.C. Pericles brought great changes to the government of Greece and also great changes to the nature of art and progress of his time. The New Temple of Athens and The Parthenon were built along with many others. He had used building projects in a political way. His actions set the standard for not only Athens but Greece also. He believed that they should follow the path of no one but instead they should be a model to others. He also thought that they should be a guiding force to others and to follow through on their actions, deeds and excellence. People looked at Pericles as the guardian of his city and fought for the excellen ce of Athens in the future. He legacy still remains today for his democracy and his image of art, culture, politics and potential of Greece to succeed. Pericles had held true to the values of democracy and the belief that all people had a place and purpose within the start. That still holds true to the world today. Martin Luther had the idea to stop corruption in the Catholic Church and expose them. Society was dominated by the Catholic Church, which means the church had excessive control over everything and everyone. The Renaissance was also taking place. The Renaissance was a time of a rebirth of culture. It had begun in northern Italy and spread throughout Europe. The Protestant Reformation had developed also. In the early 16th century, Martin Luther had discovered the churches selling of indulgences along with other things. In 1510, Luther traveled to Rome where he got a degree in theology and became a professor. In 1513 he began lecturing. At this time, this is where he found many things that would change his life and also the course of the church. He often found himself in conflict with the church doctrines. In 1517, Luther posted the Ninety-Five Theses. He had exposed the church for the sale of indulgences. Many people only knew and believed what the church told them. After refusing to r ecant, he set himself in great motion for ultimate excommunication. 1520 the Pope had sent a letter to Luther with a threat of excommunication and he then, publically burned the letter. A year later in 1521 Luther was excommunicated. He hid at the Warthburg Castle until 1522 then returned to Wittenberg and continued to teach till his death. Luther’s reform had spread into Switzerland and Holland. His teachings had opened the door to religious and civil freedom. After the widespread of his teachings to other countries, it led us to the more open society and more religious freedom that we have today. Both Martin Luther and Pericles had a great impact on the world in their time and in the society we have today. Without their determination to continue on a fight for what was not only what they believed in but what was right, the world might not have been as different today as it was.

Can Prejudice Ever Be Eliminated? Essay

The idea of prejudice has been present for several decades now, and is so deeply rooted in our society today. They can be defined as a set of negative and irrational feelings, beliefs, and actions that are directed towards those of a different race, culture and religion. In the States, the African-American race has long been under prejudice by the Whites in the community. The Holocaust during World War II is also a portrayal of extreme prejudice against the Jews. According to Psychologist Gordon Allport, prejudice emerges in part as a result of normal human thinking, in other words, it is in human nature. Despite efforts and measures taken to reduce and minimise the extent of prejudice today, as long as humans have a conscious thought, they will always be prejudice in one way or another, and prejudice can and will never be eradicated. Through all the movements toward equal rights, there are still groups of people who are faced with prejudice and unfair treatment, one of which is LGBT (lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender) community. LGBTs have been faced with many challenges regarding their fair rights and acceptance in society. One key issue that has become more apparent recently is the allowance of homosexual marriage. Our world has become more accepting, but still lacks in complete recognition of homosexuals. There are still many out there who do not recognize them as a part of society and it has affected more than just their community. Children who have parents that are homosexual are also affected because they face the prejudice from others who do not understand, which has damaging effects on the child’s development. Many homosexuals look to adoption when they decide to have a family because of their unique situation, and are also faced with discrimination when going through the adoption process. Though in other parts of the world like the Netherlands, Norway and recently USA, homosexual marriages are allowed, in Singapore, Section 377A of the Penal Code indicates that it is a crime to have homosexual marriages, showing the conservative of our society and the unacceptance of LGBT community. As such, though the acceptance level towards the GLBT community have been increasing throughout the years, the idea of removing the social stigma is seemingly impossible. Interracial marriages are yet another issue in which many around the world are prejudiced towards it. Interracial marriages have a hard go at it. They suffer not only from the prejudice of others, but also from problems of differences between their respective cultures which combine with those already present in a marriage. In USA, marriage between a Black and White is still being frowned upon by many in the society, mainly because of the prejudice against the Blacks which has been around since the 1900s. Not only the parents will be discriminated against, their children will also be frowned upon by the society. In the book â€Å"To Kill a Mockingbird† which touches largely about the topic of prejudice in USA back in the early 1900s, a White man named Dolphus Raymond was frowned upon by society by marrying a a black woman and having children with her. His children were being discriminated against for the fact that they have â€Å"dirty blood†, as the White’s blood which is supposedly ‘pure’ is tainted with a Black’s. In present times, though the final law against interracial marriages in the States was removed on 2000, the social stigma will still be present. In addition, gender prejudice had long been woven into the fabric of most societies. Mr. M came across as the type of wise old Irishman you might run into in a quaint pub and spend hours sipping Guinness, telling jokes and exchanging personal experiences with. Perhaps the reason why College Prep II became such a welcomed challenge for my classmates and I had something to do with the high level of respect Mr. M showed us. Although we were nothing more than scared, immature high school seniors, he talked to us as if... ...ard sentence structure or maybe even a few contradictory ideas would take our paper from a B+ to a C-. However, no one knew that Mr. M was not grading us solely upon our final draft, but on our ability to embrace writing as a continuous process where there is always room for improvement. Pierre Bourdieu Biography and His Work Pierre Bourdieu was a renowned sociologist and public intellectual who made significant contributions to  general sociological theory, theorizing the link between education and culture, and research into the intersections of taste, class, and education. His book  Distinction: A Social Critique of the Judgment of Taste  is the most cited sociology text in recent decades. Biography Bourdieu was born August 1, 1930, in Denguin, France, and died in Paris on January 23, 2002. He grew up in a small village in the south of France and attended a public high school nearby before moving to Paris to attend  the Lycà ©e Louis-le-Grand. Following that, Bourdieu studied philosophy at the École Normale Supà ©rieure- also in Paris. Career and Later Life Upon graduation, Bourdieu taught philosophy at the high school of Moulins, a small town in mid-central France, before serving in the French army in Algeria, then taking a post as lecturer in Algiers in 1958. Bourdieu conducted ethnographic research  while the Algerian War continued. As he made the lecture, he used slides of his CT scans that beamed out to the audience and told his audience about the cancer that was devouring his pancreas. The cancer he said would claim his life in a matter of months but on the stage that day, Randy appeared youthful and energetic and above all knowledgeable. He seemed invincible to the audience but this was a brief moment, as he himself acknowledged during the lecture. The last lecture became a phenomenon, as it was based on the same principles of celebrating the dreams we all strive to make realities. The speech that Randy Pausch delivered was one-of-a-kind since it made the world stop and pay attention and this was possible because in the cause of the lecture, Pausch was upbeat and humorous. He alternated between wisecracks, insights on computer science and engineering education (Randy). He offered inspirational life lessons followed up by actions such as performing push-ups on stage. This makes the listener wonder and be encouraged of the fact that despite Pausch knowing that he is going to die and he is in his final hours of life, he is still jovial. It was a way to explicitly encourage listeners on how to carry on with life despite knowing that we will die later on. On the other hand, his book advises individuals on building multi-disciplinary collaborations, working in groups and good interaction with other people. Pausch expresses a five star attitude because despite being diagnosed with terminal cancer, he explains that it is just an engineering problem. He notes that he had only 3-6 months to live and with it he has three small children who would never know him. The book draws peoples emotion without the inclusion of paralinguistic features and can at times subject them to subjective opinions. The lecture he gave helps people know how to live your life as if you were dying, an irony he put out well. He avoids showing deeper emotions in such a way that it made the lecture a celebration of his life. We are made to know what to do when life throws brick walls on our way. He said that we have a choice which is, to stop or go around the bricks. We are supposed to play out our cards to get dealt instead of bitching about them. This is explained in details in the book as compared to the lecture he gave. The deeper explanation encourages one to go around the bricks than stopping. On the other hand the lecture in explaining obstacles, expresses death with an example about President Cohen, who having realised Pausch was going to do this talk, said to him that he should introduce a concept about having fun (Randy). He explains that just like a fish talking about the importance of water he also did know how to have fun despite waiting for his death. He explains that he is going to con tinue to have every day he is left with because theres no other way to play it. In the book, Mr. Pausch says to us that "The brick walls are there for a reason, they are not there to keep us out, but the brink walls are there to give us a chance to know how badly we want something (Pausch and Jeffrey, 51). We always find out that a lot of people want some shortcut in life but through reading the book, there is a candid explanation that shows that the best shortcut is the long way, this boils down to two words as hard work. It explains that if only we could stop taking a shortcut and work a little harder then we can have a better life. The reference to the brick wall has been made several times to remind us that it is so true. The only way to live with the obstacles is that as he says, "Time is all you have. And you may find one day that you have less than you think (Pausch and Jeffrey, 111). This is a major realization in anyones life since many people think that they have so much time, but it slides by so quickly. We should take the time to do the things we wan t and never put them off since "Luck is indeed where preparation meets opportunity" (Pausch and Jeffrey, 119) we should always be prepared. The lecture has a positive voice, making it interesting and helpful. Knowing that you are going to die can be at times devastating because any news about an ill heath that would shorten life can be quite disturbing. To add on it one is left hopeless to find that even the doctors cannot do anything to help. On the contrary, Pausch experiences and the last lecture he gave were made up of true and touching incidences which help live positive or find something that will help us want to be a better person. There are some bits of wisdom that can be carried and copied into our lives. Despite involving oneself in the emotional moments, we are also forced to laugh several times too. The lecture touches anyone who has had their life touched by cancer, it benefit all from the optimism Mr. Pausch has because of the seriousness of the issues at hand. The optimism in the current negative world is very uplifting. In contrast it is from the book that we are able to understand that experience is what we get when we dont get what you want in life. We are made aware of this when Mr. Pausch was describing the strength and love he had for his wife, Jai. He says that she is the one who will be left to raise the three children to preschool-age (Pausch and Jeffrey, 130). As a matter of encouragement to the readers, he talked about how his cancer diagnosis had encouraged him and given him the time to have open and vital conversations with his wife. This he says would not have been possible if he still had a lot of time to live. Through all the encouragement he gave her, I believe made he cope with the fact and as he says, she was coping and was doing it without the attention and even adulation that surrounded the last days of his life. This cannot be so in the daily life of an individual surrounded by such obstacles. In this situation, weak individuals would have circum to sever stress or any other dis ease that would come as an emotional outburst. The reality and power expressed in the book, gives us a lot to think about in what we want to prioritize in our lives. It directs what we might say to the people we love when we know that we are going to leave them behind. It arouses the desire to want to kiss your friends or your parents and call relatives too because he sums that "All you have is what you bring with you" (Pausch and Jeffrey, 159). Finally, to enable the message reach the audience, we are able to see that throughout the lecture, professor Pausch remained very upbeat, he was charismatic and the nerdy persona he displayed was infectious. Fro the book, as we read, we cant help but we consider and ponder what we would when faced with such circumstances if we know we have only months to live. With good communication and savvy and personality, he avoids very reserved, sombre tone for this speech since it would treat every word as if it were a matter of life or death. This method would have drawn more attention to his condition rather than the core message and that is why everyone who listens to the message is left with the desire to change. Even though he was being personal to some extend and the entire speech having a content with personal lessons learned through life illuminated through personal stories, Randy had a way to tell the stories while still creating some distance and remaining somewhat clinical (Randy).
